Hatton Garden – London’s famous jewellery quarter

Hatton Garden is London’s prime jewellery quarter, located just north of Holborn Circus. This Clerkenwell street has been one of London’s most mysterious and secretive streets and has been home to a private working community of diamond and jewellery for over two centuries.

In the 1850’s and 60’s, Hatton Garden was transformed into a commercial locality, with all kinds of businesses entering the area. Clerkenwell had long been a centre for jewellery craftsmen and watch and clock makers and these trades began to spread into Hatton Garden at this time.

Soon afterwards, the street became a cutting centre for Indian diamonds and then added a trade in gold and platinum. By 1885, the diamond business peaked, when 67 precious stone merchants were recorded in Hatton Garden and its adjacent streets.

London’s Silver Vaults – a hidden gem!

The London Silver Vaults was established in 1953 and houses the world’s largest collection of fine antique silver. It is a little-known underground maze of antique silver dealers that occupy an expansive Victorian storage facility beneath Chancery Lane.

It is within walking distance from Hatton Garden and most Londoners don’t even know of its existence! It’s free to visit and you can simply walk down the stairs and freely browse one of the largest silver markets on Earth.

This shopping destination is home to 30 specialist retailers that sell precious silver objects from all corners of the world. All the shops operate as independent businesses and most of them are family run!
